Faculty is the backbone of any educational
Institute for Quality Assurance in professional Education.
Institute should be able to attract, train, motivate, and
retain talented faculty. For training and
development of faculty,
so far, by and large, the professional education system depends
on initiatives
from government agencies.
Today most of engineering colleges in country
are facing acute shortage of quality faculty because
of following
reasons:
- The Technical
education in country is experiencing such an unprecedented
demand
outstripping the supply of good faculty members.
-
The quality
institutes offering masters and doctoral programs are limited
and
produce only a fraction of what this sector requires.
-
There is a huge
demand for the industry for well qualified engineers.
-
Teaching as
career is considered a last option since it is not as rewarding
financially
as industry.
-
Teaching is
considered less challenging than professional career.
In the teaching-learning process colleges
are not complete unless it covers all the three dimensions
i.e.
Creation of Knowledge (Research), Application of Knowledge
(Use in practical situations) and
transmission of Knowledge
to next generation (Teaching). The huge paucity of quality
manpower in
academics has forced colleges to put fresh graduates
straightway on the job of teaching. They have
little or no
experience in handling the teaching process nor college have
enough number of senior
teachers to guide them resulting into
the poor quality of teaching.
Scope of FDI
FDI is currently focusing on development
of faculty for professional colleges (Engineering/Management/Medical/Paramedical/Education).
It is not a degree awarding
institution, rather it is providing
short term skill up-gradation programs for those who wish
to make
career in teaching in professional colleges. This
program is also aimed in up-grading the skills and
knowledge
