Today most of engineering colleges in country are in acute
shortage of quality faculty, the various reasons are:
- The Technical education in country is experiencing such
an unprecedented demand outstripping the supply of good
faculty members.
- The quality institutes offering masters and doctoral programs
are limited and produce only a fraction of what this sector
requires.
- There is a huge demand for the industry for well qualified
engineers.
- Teaching as career is considered a last option since it
is not as rewarding financially as industry.
- Teaching is considered less challenging than professional
career.
- Teaching also associate with lower social status.
In the teaching-learning process colleges are not complete
unless it covers all the three dimensions i.e. Creation of
Knowledge (Research), Assimilation of Knowledge (Use in practical
situations) and transmission of Knowledge to next generation
(Teaching). The huge paucity of quality manpower in academics
has forced colleges to put fresh graduates straightway on
the job of teaching. They have little or no experience in
handling the teaching process nor college have enough number
of senior teachers to guide them resulting into the poor quality
of teaching.
Sharda group of Institutions under the visionary chairmanship
of Mr. P. K. Gupta has come with an innovative solution to
develop a Faculty Training Institute to groom faculty, utilizing
the potential of professors retiring from the top Institutions
like IITs and NITs, Scientists from research institutions
and laboratories and professionals from industry. The main
objectives of using such resources are to develop new ideas
and make innovations in teaching-learning process. The expertise
of the Sr. professors and ex-corporate professionals can be
clubbed to transform the learning process from knowing of
subject to understanding the subject. The Faculty Training
Institute will conduct one-three months programs with the
following objective in mind.
- Development of following skills in trainees
- Teaching methodology,
- Teaching content development and management
- Communication skills
- Leadership and command skills
- Subject knowledge
- Research aptitude
- Inculcate thinking based education practice
- Reduce the time period to develop a quality teacher.
- Standardization and quality management in teaching.
- Motivation to excel in teaching and research.
- Application of knowledge to real life problems even at
learning stage.
- Generate integrity and belongingness for the organization
- Extra academic activities
FDI is currently focusing on development of faculty for professional
colleges (Engineering/Management/Medical/Paramedical/Education).
It is not a degree awarding institution, rather it is providing
short term skill up-gradation programs for those who wish
to make career in teaching in professional colleges. This
program is also aimed in up-grading the skills and knowledge
graph of existing faculty members of a college
Currently FTP is conducted in following areas
Electronics/Communication/Instrumentation/Electrical/Computer
Science/Information Technology/Mechanical/Management/Mathematics/Physics/Chemistry
